There are many things you can do to try and improve your Spanish: take classes, join a conversation group, use an app, find a language partner… and yes, all of that helps.
But in this episode of the podcast, my guest and I talked about something that makes a much bigger difference: a language immersion experience.
My guest is Sergio Delgado, a Spanish teacher with almost 15 years of experience who now runs immersive Spanish experiences in Almería.
You may recognise one of his partners because he was one of the first guests in the podcast. You can read (or listen) about Fabi’s Camino experience here.
Benefits of a Spanish immersion experience
Although everybody probably knows what an immersion is, I started by asking Sergio about it, just in case.
Sergio explained it very clearly: to make real progress in your language learning, you need volume, especially after you reach a certain level. You need hours and hours of exposure. Not just a couple of lessons a week, but full days where Spanish is everywhere: conversations, signs, food, culture… everything.
That’s what immersion experiences will give you: the chance to live your life in Spanish for a few days.
In his case, these are short stays (from a few days to a couple of weeks) in Almería (Southeast Spain), where students are surrounded by Spanish 24/7.
Not sitting in a classroom all day. Quite the opposite.
You spend the day exploring the desert (yes, Europe’s only natural desert is in Almería), and learning vocabulary related to nature, animals, and geology at the same time… without it feeling like a lesson.
Or you might go kayaking in Cabo de Gata, try local tapas, visit historical sites like the Alcazaba, or even explore old film sets from classic western movies.
Basically, you’re learning Spanish while doing things you’d probably want to do anyway.
These experiences are designed for people who already have some Spanish and want to use it, not just study it. So instead of grammar-heavy lessons, the focus is on living the language.
There’s a bit of structure, like a short session in the morning over coffee to prepare vocabulary for the day, and a quick wrap-up at the end, but the real learning happens outside.
And that’s the key difference.
In a classroom, someone can tell you about Spanish culture. In an immersion experience, you actually live it.
Why Almería
We also talked about why Almería is such a good place for this.
The main advantage is that there are very few international tourists compared to other parts of Spain. Which means less English. More Spanish.
Exactly what you want.
Plus, it’s a region that has a bit of everything: beaches, mountains, desert landscapes, great food, and a really interesting mix of history and culture. Not to mention the weather; although, as Sergio warned, maybe avoid July and August unless you enjoy extreme heat.
Camino in Almería
Of course, I couldn’t resist bringing it back to the Camino. Because you can actually start the Camino Mozárabe from Almería. It’s not a very popular route (yet), but that also means a less crowded experience and more opportunities to use Spanish.
To be honest, I don’t know much about this route. I just know it joins the Vía de la Plata in Mérida, but I don’t know how it gets there from Almería.
Sergio has walked a couple of Caminos in the past couple of years and he’s considering walking from Almería next. If he does, I might have to bring him back to tell us all about it.
In the meantime, if you’re serious about improving your Spanish an immersion experience is worth considering.
Because learning a language isn’t just about studying it. It’s about living it.
And even a few days can make a bigger difference than months of traditional study.
